Almost everybody today knows Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters, but few know about Julie McQueen. It's a pity, because she (BE) a very good writer, and Jane Austen (LOVE) her books. Her life was short and tragic, but she (WRITE) great books.
McQueen (BE BORN) in 1791 and (DIE) in 1815, two days before her twenty-fourth birthday. She (DIE) of tuberculosis. She (SPEND) her whole life in Chester, in Northern England. Her father was the captain of a merchant ship, and she rarely (SEE) him. Her mother wrote poems. Julie McQueen (HAVE) two older sisters, but they died in an accident when Julie (BE) six.
Julie (GET) sick when she was 14, and that is when she (START) writing. She (WRITE) some short stories, but she never published them under her own name. Nobody knows how many short stories she wrote, and how many (APPEAR) in the magazines. But she also (WRITE) three books. The first, Where the Wild Geese Fly, from 1806, is a collection of fairy tales. Three years later, at age 17, McQueen published Because I Could not Stop for Him, a collection of poems about death, life, hope and love. And in 1814, Farewell appeared: her only novel, the story of a young girl doomed to die. It is very sad, but also beautiful. The protagonist, Mary, never gives up hope, and never despairs.
