Midnight Oil (be) an Australian alternative rock band from Australia. They (start) playing in 1972, but their name (be) Farm then. They (change) the name in 1976. Rob Hirst (play) the drums, Jim Morginie (be) the lead guitarist and keyboarder, and Andrew James (play) the bass guitar.

In the beginning, "the Oils" (not have) a singer. They (look) for one, and they found Peter Garrett. Peter (live) in Canberra, the capital, but he soon (move) to Sydney. But not because of the band, but because he (want to) finish his degree in Law there.

The band (become) very popular in the 1980s. Andrew, the bassman, (have to) leave because he (get) very ill -Peter Gifford and, later, Bones Hillman (take over). Also, a new guitarist (join): Martin Rotsey. Midnight Oil (have) many hits in Australia and in the rest of the world. But they (be) also famous for their political activism -all members (be) environmentalists, and they (fight) for indigenous rights and social justice.

The band finally (break up) in 2002. Peter (have) too much to do: he (focus) on politics and, in 2007, he (become) a minister in the Australian government. So, the current Australian Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth is an old rock star.

Midnight Oil (perform) once more in 2009, at the Sound Relief festival in Melbourne. They (collect) a lot of money for bushfire victims.
